The Caerleon Chronicle uses the term metahuman to describe ghouls, kinfolk, kinain, psychics, sorcerers and others who brush against the supernatural world but are essentially human. They are typically immune to the Delirium and have a starting banality of 6 instead of 7 for normal humans. This can be lowered even more with the faerie affinity merit.
While there is a limit to the number of changelings, vampires and werewolves that everyone can play, metahuman creation is far more open. Though they lack the same "uberness" of the other venues, metahumans are essential for the story. They also provide a lot of really good roleplaying opportunities for everyone. To this end, metahuman characters are really going to be encourages, especially when they are created to be the servants/family/contacts/victims of established supernatural characters or other metahumans.
Its possible for metahumans to be "more" than just one type. Kinfolk and kinain might also be magicians or psychics for example and any type of metahuman can be ghouled by a vampire. However, only the first form of meta-nature is free: the others cost 4 points at creation. Also, a character normally needs to purchase the meta-nature of kithain or kinain at creation. Psychic powers can manifest over the course of the chronicle, magic can be learned, falling under a vampire's thrall and becoming its special servant are events that can happen via roleplay, however. Doing so just requires investing XP to purchase the meta-nature and good roleplay.
Types of Meta-Natures[]
- Kinain- the descendent of a Changeling who have "fairy blood" and frequently mild forms of magical gifts or enhanced abilities.
- Kinfolk- the descendent of a Garou or other shifter who have "wolfblood" making them more likely to breed Pureborn. They sometimes have magical gifts or enhanced abilities.
- Ghouls- a person who drinks the blood of a vampire and who is willed into servitude them. Ghouls have greater abilities than the average human.
- Psychic- possessing extra-sensory forms of perception, psychics are usually born gifted but their latent powers may only manifest after some kind of event triggers them. Once a psychic has awoken, they can learn to master and advance their powers over time.
- Sorcerer- also called magicians, witches, shamans, saints, these people have strong magical gifts that can be attributed to either natural ability or a special connection to the spirit world or the Divine.
